For roof water supplies collected from properties with chimneys or open fires, ensuring annual monitoring to detect contaminants from atmospheric deposition and combustion by-products.

Why This Suite Is Important

Roof-collected rainwater can accumulate heavy metals and organic contaminants from external sources, particularly chimneys, open fires, or air pollution.

  • Benzo(a)pyrene is a known carcinogen formed from incomplete combustion.
  • Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and copper may leach from roofing materials, flashings, or atmospheric pollution.
  • Regular monitoring helps ensure that your water remains safe for drinking and household use.

 

The Maximum Acceptable Values (MAVs) and treatment limits for these determinands are:

Chemical & Physical Contaminants:

  • Cadmium: 0.004 mg/L
  • Copper: 2.0 mg/L
  • Lead: 0.01 mg/L
  • Zinc: 1.5 mg/L (Aesthetic guideline only)
  • Benzo(a)pyrene: 0.00001 mg/L
  • 📌 If you have a Safe Supply Online Drinking Water Safety Plan, your test results can be automatically shared with the online tool, made available to members of your water supply, and scheduled for submission to the regulator as required.
  • 📌 Results must be retained for at least 5 years and made available to all members of the water supply.
